Our visits to Weenen Game Reserve

We have visited Weenen Game Reserves quite a few times now. It’s one of our favourite spots for a hassle-free weekend away as it’s really close to Durban and the self-catering cottage means that we can just arrive and feel settled right away.

Since having kids, we also love the fact that Weenen is a small reserve with lots of opportunities to get out of the car safely. Whether it’s at one of the hides or picnic sites, our kids get to feel like they are in the bush without the stress that comes from being in a Big 5 area.

Staying in the reserve means you can get up with the sun and get on the hunt for wildlife right away.

While there are some beatiful animals in the reserve, we find that the main attraction to Weenen is the fact that we are usually the only other people in the reserve. Most people seem to head towards the more famous reserves in the province, so when we just want to get into the bush without running into a crowd, Weenen is our go to reserve.

When coming from Durban, we like to link up a drive through the midlands on the way back. It makes for an epic day and helps break up the drive.
