FAQ

The Garden Route is the stretch between Mossel Bay in the Western Cape and Storms River in the Eastern Cape. The stretch includes towns like George, Wilderness, Sedgefield, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and Nature’s Valley.

The main road through the Garden Route is the N2 highway which is an open road that allows to fast driving between towns. As such, if you are just planning on driving through the Garden Route from end to end without stopping, you could do this in a matter of hours. However, you’ll definitely want to stop along the way to take in all the famous sites in this iconic part of the country, so, it’s probably best to give yourself an entire day if you’re passing through, although, staying overnight is the way we’d go.

The Garden Route is famous for its natural beauty. The area is basically a corridor that is bordered by the Indian Ocean, with all it’s incredible wildlife on one side, and a towering mountain range, covered in Afromontane forests and fynbos on the other. There are also a few iconic hiking trails in the area – the most notable being the Otter Trail which starts at Storms River and ends in Nature’s Valley. The Garden Route is also an adventure hub with activities ranging from ziplining through the forest to white water rafting, sky diving and much, much more.

The Garden Route is one of the safest drives in South Africa. The road condition is good (compared with the rest of the country) and the strong focus on tourism means that there is an emphasis on safety along the routes and in the towns along the way. As with anywhere in South Africa, there are good places and bad ones – but fortunately, if you follow the N2, you’re more than likely going to remain in the good areas.

The Gardern Route is a paradise all year round, so there really isn’t a specific season to try and plan for. The summers are warm making the coastal towns very appealing, while the winter months are cool and comfortable.
