The Vhembe district is comprised of four local municipalities: Musina, Thulamela, Makhado and Collins Chabane. While there are a number of developed town centres in the area, most of the Vhembe district is rural.

Currently, Thohoyandou is the administrative centre of the Vhembe district. In the past, this town also served as the capital of the bantustan of Venda.

Some of the areas around Thohoyandou that are quite popular with tourists include Lake Fundudzi, the Phiphidi Falls, Tshatshingo Pothole sand the Thathe Vondo Holy Forest.

Vhembe is the local Venda word for the Limpopo River – a large river that forms the border between South Africa and Zimbabwe as well as South Africa and parts of Botswana.
