How to pronounce Zulu clicks with Sakhile Dube
The Zulu language is one of the most unique languages in the world. It is primarily spoken by the Zulu people who are synonymous with the eastern part of South Africa in a province called KwaZulu-Natal (“kwa” meaning “home of”). However, it is a common language spoken by many other African people groups.
During the early 19th century, the most famous king of the Zulus, King Shaka, involved his armies in an expansion campaign that spread both the Zulu culture and language to other parts of southern Africa. Even a small town in the northern most region of Namibia bears a Zulu name – Katima Mulilo.
The Zulus themselves are a part of a larger people group know as the Ngunis. The Xhosas, Ndebele and Swazis are also part of the Nguni group and have similar languages. Many of the languages spoken by the Nguni people of southern Africa as well as the San people have a range of click sounds.
In this video, Sakhile Dube from St Lucia in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, demonstrates how these click sounds are pronounced in the Zulu language.
He has an epic voice 🙂
